Beautiful Karner Blue Butterfly on Brink of Revival

Karner blue butterfly

Formed nearly 12,000 years ago by a receding glacial lake, the Albany Pine Bush Preserve in New York hosts a rare ecosystem, one of only 20 inland pine barrens in the world. Its sand dunes hold a unique variety of habitats, yet nutrient-poor soils, that support a diverse range of plants and animals that thrive in an environment too barren to support competing species. This unusual landscape, surrounded by development, also holds within it an equally rare species: the endangered Karner blue butterfly, named by lepidopterist (and "Lolita" author) Vladimir Nabokov in 1944. And yet this U.S. National Natural Landmark seems always on the brink of destruction. In the face of large-scale development in the area, grassroots organizations like Save the Pine Bush have had to repeatedly rescue the park — and the blue lupine flowers that feed the local community of Karner butterflies — from annihilation.  July 29; http://news.discovery.com/animals/insects/beautiful-karner-blue-butterfly-on-brink-of-revival-150729.htm

This news is best explained if we go back to the chart for the lunar eclipse of October 8, 2014 at Pine Bush, NY . The eclipse lunar cycle began with the New Moon of 24 September 2014. In his post on the lunar cycle titled “Stewardship in the Tinyness of our Vastness” , Nick Fiorenza  [1] wrote:

This New Moon and this lunar cycle invite us to…participate in concert with and respect for all life and the creation process itself. Makemake …..impels extraordinary feats of achievement to demonstrate we are worthy to steward our beloved home, and to protect and care for all life.

The most prominent event is the Total Lunar Eclipse conjoining Uranus on the South Lunar Node occurring on October 8. The eclipse is placed powerfully on the horizon at Pine Bush,NY and is also part of a T-square with Uranus-Pluto. A Uranus Lunar Eclipse is significant and potent. It impels a radical departure from the patterns and conformity of the past.

On the Ascendant is Venus, the planet which symbolically represents beauty is placed amidst stars of the Virgin’s wing and the Crow’s wing. David McCann in his article “The Astrology of Colour”  [2] informs us that  the colour blue comes under the rulership of Venus.  So we are already homing in on “blue wings”.

But let us go one step further. The eclipse Moon along with Uranus is also part of a Grand Trine with Jupiter[17le]  and Mars [16sa]. Jupiter is conjunct  the star Dubhe, alpha (α) Ursa Major [15le]. Diana Rosenberg links this area with “issues relating to the destruction or protection of animals and the environment”. Here Mars is conjunct  V801 Arae, in the Altar’s flame. The Altar is part of a bigger picture that includes Centaurus and the Beast. Centaurus-the-Punisher and Lupus, the Beast of Death are together often prominent in acts of prejudice and cruelty. But the Centaur’s act of sacrificing the Beast in Ara’s flames symbolically represents lighting the way out of darkness towards loving forbearance and new hope for the future.

An Easter Sunrise

As always Sabian symbols can be very illuminating. Here the symbol for Mars is “An Easter Sunrise” pointing  to a resurrection or rebirth.

Progressing the eclipse chart to July 29, the date of the news, once again aligns the eclipse with the horizon axis triggering its meaning.
