Mercury retrograde: Chaos at APEC Summit

Washington will not change its pressure tactics against Beijing until it bows to US terms, Vice President Mike Pence said at an APEC summit, where members loudly denounced protectionism and sanctions as threats to global trade. “The US will not change course until China changes its ways,” Pence said Saturday, speaking at an Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in Papua New Guinea, where he touted the “decisive action” taken by the US to address trade imbalance with China. https://www.rt.com/business/444229-us-china-pressure-apec/

Mercury  was a major god in Roman religion and mythology, being one of the Dii Consentes within the ancient Roman pantheon. He was the god of financial gain, commerce, eloquence, messages, communication [1].

Mercury turned retrograde [2] November 17.  The retro phase tends to bring unforeseen changes and blockages, but the aggravation and frustration that many of us experience during these periods is often due to our ego-fixation. Mercury sets out to restructure our thinking processes, and for many of us this is painful and frustrating. Moreover, these experiences reveal flaws in our internal organization as well as our external planning that can make us feel foolish and inadequate. Mercury retrograde affects people differently, depending on where it hits their personal charts. Gemini and Virgo are affected because Mercury rules these two signs. (Incidentally US Vice President Mike Pence (born June 7, 1959)  is a Gemini  [3] and Mercury has stationed [14sa] within 2 degrees of an opposition to his radix Sun [16ge]).

Mercury retrograde gives rise to personal misunderstandings; flawed, disrupted, or delayed communications, negotiations and trade.

"Mercury retrograde can turn into a very bumpy ride if we are not listening to what life is asking of us, are rushing, are lacking self-awareness, or if we are trying to push our own agendas. Themes of Mercury retrograde can show up in the area of relationships as poor communication or misunderstandings, and the hurt feelings, reactivity, or conflicts that arise as a result. For some it can also manifest as a tendency to isolate or push their loved ones away in unskilled or hurtful ways. For others it may show up as feeling unheard, or like they just can't get their message across. It can also exacerbate and highlight where we have inappropriate expectations of others, and the disappointment and resentment that can arise when those expectations go unmet."

Having understood how Mercury retrograde behaves let us turn our attention to the US national chart – the Sibly. Notice that the Mercury retro station has taken place exactly on the Sibly Ascendant making hard aspect to  Sibly progressed Sun [13pi] and the Hades – Cupido – Pluto radix square. Martha Wescott interprets Pluto-Hades as under:

Pluto-Hades :   decline through debt and loss of integrity ; to see upheavals and confrontations that really bring no relief ; ugliness that is rooted in resentment or a desire for revenge or power.

Robert Hand interprets Sun to Ascendant square:

Progressed Sun [13pi] square Ascendant [13sa]
A great deal of energy is applied to dominate others or you may encounter others who try to dominate you. Do not be so concerned with your desires that your actions are out of harmony with those around you. Do not be so willful that you actually get in the way of your own intentions.
