As
the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the state-controlled agency
responsible for operating the New York City subway and its buses, prepares to
shutter a heavily used subway line that connects Northern Brooklyn with Lower
Manhattan so that it can undergo necessary maintenance to repair some of the
lingering damage from Hurricane Sandy, the recently appointed head of the
agency has warned that NYC and New York State are facing a stark choice: Either
invest $40 billion in the subway for badly needed upgrades and improvements, or
allow one of the world's most heavily used mass transit systems to sink into a
"death spiral," according to Bloomberg. Dec. 17
Astrology regards a chart of the heavens for the time of
birth of an entity as the basis for understanding its essential nature as well
as how its future will evolve. The New York Subway was inaugurated at 2:35 pm
of October 27, 1904 [1]. A horoscope for
this date and time is shown here.
Readers familiar with astrology will know that planets or
planetary combinations on the angles (horizon or meridian) of a horoscope are
the ones to focus on. Here we have a Moon-Pluto conjunction on the lower
meridian (nadir) or IC of the chart. Among other things, the IC or the 4th
house cusp as well as Pluto represent things underground [2][3]. Pluto and the
Moon are both in tropical Gemini – the sign that is ruled by Mercury – the god
of travel. Here Pluto [21ge29] is conjunct the star Capella [20ge31]. Alpha (α)
Auriga, Capella, is a white star and the 6th largest star in the sky in the
constellation of the Charioteer. Now isn’t
this stunning. Pluto – the god of the Underworld combines with a Chariot. In
modern terms it so elegantly symbolizes the subway!
Astrological directions (progressions and transits) are
one of the main means used in Horoscopic astrology to forecast future trends
and developments. Progressed and transiting movements of the planets indicate
phases in the individual's life when the potential shown in the natal chart
will be given opportunities for development, whether through favourable or
unfavourable circumstances.
Going back to the chart, we recognize three important
directions for the current period. First solar arc progressed Neptune is
conjunct radix Sun. Second transit Neptune is conjunct the TNP Hades/ South
Node and square the meridian. And finally, the current New Moon [16sa] has
fallen on the MC triggering transit Neptune.
Notice that the New Moon chart at New York has Pluto in
Capricorn on the IC, once again a reference to the underground. In her
excellent article Pluto in Capricorn and
our decaying infrastructure, Lynn Hayes [4] writes:
America’s
infrastructure is not only showing its age, but showing that it lacks capacity
to handle the volume of people and goods moving today. From exploding steam
pipes under New York streets, to record level flight delays in the skies across
the country, it is evident that now is the time to move on a robust,
thoughtful, and comprehensive plan to build, maintain, and fund a world-class
21st century infrastructure. There can be no more delay.
Since Neptune is so significant in the current
directions, it maybe worthwhile to understand how its energies work. Physically
Neptune tends to all structures. Its constant dynamic is to dissolve
structures, to bring all things back to an undifferentiated unity. So
dissolution and disintegration [5]are some of the ways in which Neptune works
which is exactly what is happening to the NY Subway.
