Astrology of India’s social unrest, Part III

Many supporters of the ruling regime justify legislating differentiated citizenship rights based on religious identity, and the planned National Register of Citizens, as necessary for completing the unfinished business of Partition. In spirited denial, tens of thousands of youthful, middle- and working-class peaceful protesters coursing on to the streets around the country are completing the unfinished business of the freedom struggle and healing the wounds of Partition…. the long night of darkness has suddenly been interrupted by bursts of light in every corner of the land. I have in these weeks attended and spoken in protests in various corners of the country. Our young people are rebelling against the hate that older generations have raised them in. The popular movement led by India’s young for solidarity, for Hindu-Muslim unity, for a just and kind country, is picking up the unfinished business of the freedom struggle. https://bit.ly/2GAKtCs

Astrologers assign two horoscopes for India. The first is the horoscope of India’s independence from British rule on August 15, 1947 and the second is for January 26, 1950 when India became a republic. In  the previous two posts [1][2] we  confined ourselves to examining the chart for the republic. Here we look at India’s independence chart to see if  information gleaned from the chart throws additional light on what we have discussed so far.

India gained its independence on August 15, 1947 at the stroke of the midnight hour. For astrologers an exact time for a national horoscope is a rarity and a delight to work with. With this time a very reliable horoscope can be cast. Readers who are familiar with astrology will know that planets on the horizon or meridian axes are considered especially significant. Here we have a Saturn-Pluto conjunction within a degree of the IC – the lower meridian or the cusp of the 4th house. The 4th house in a national chart  represents 'roots', tradition and history.

In his excellent essay The Saturn-Pluto Synodic Cycles - A Historical Exploration 1851 – 2020, [3] Nick Fiorenza writes

A Saturn-Pluto synodic cycle, in general, will be about societal structures of consciousness and how we learn about responsible use of power. It will be about our administrative systems governing the use of power. These cycles can also initiate a dismantling or destructive process of long-standing established administrative constructs and systems of belief so that we can evolve our societal structures. In the process, this can articulate as power struggles, wars and the like; but Saturn and Pluto will ultimately demand we take responsibility for the discord and destruction we have created.

On August 22, 1947, a heliocentric conjunction of Saturn and Pluto (referred to as a synod) took place amid the stars Acubens of Cancer and Dubhe of Ursa Major.

Dubhe, Alpha Ursa Major, embodies the pursuit for a greater vision beyond the accepted political-religious dogmas of the human world that keep humanity in darkness and delusion; and against the controlling forces perpetuating that dogmatic rule. Dubhe asks us to emerge from the collective and our own personal dogmas (our belief structures) and our limiting life patterns that keep us bound in life scenarios that are less than those we truly want. Dubhe supports us to strive for a new and better future rather than merely staying reactive to the limitations we have already created and reinforce with our existing beliefs.

Acubens, Alpha Cancer, indicates entrapment in dogma. This can be the current political / religious beliefs of the times, as well as that created by our personal belief structures—the ideas we have about our lives and experiences we have in our lives. Acubens indicates a tenacious hold and stubborn resistance to release the patterns we hold that keep us entrapped in our limiting life scenarios.

So essentially, this area of the stars is about a fight between old dogmas and belief systems and a new vision for a better future free of these patterns of entrapment.

But why are we interested in the Saturn-Pluto conjunction in India’s chart right now? Well for one thing the progressed Ascendant (evolving consciousness of the masses) is now within a degree conjunct the radix Saturn-Pluto conjunction which is thereby activated.

At this point let us look at the Sabian symbol [4] of the degree [13le+] at which Saturn-Pluto conjoined in Aug. 1947. Dane Rudhyar’s commentary on the degree is relevant in the current context. Just replace “human soul” with the “soul of India” and the rest of the commentary will begin to make sense.

PHASE 134 (LEO 14°): A HUMAN SOUL SEEKING OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUTWARD MANIFESTATION.

KEYNOTE: The yearning for self-actualization.

This is the transpersonal urge of the spirit, expressing itself in many ways during the whole life span. But most avenues are blocked, and the soul waits until it can wait no longer. Then comes the dramatic release, which may mean a joyous carnival or madness.  Let the soul speak out! Allow the power of the true tone of your being to manifest itself smoothly, easily, unobstructed — or expect a variety of consequences. LET the soul manifest!

It is important to keep in mind that we are not looking at just the Saturn-Pluto conjunction of 1947. We are currently going through another Saturn-Pluto conjunction [23cp+]. Remember that one cycle weaves into  another in a continuing spiral of growth. The present conjunction makes a little known aspect – a quadnovile to original position in India’s chart.

Noviles always describe an initiation. Initiations that have been successful tend to give very pleasant results, so the novile series of aspects have developed a rather nice reputation.  However, the quad-novile (160°) can be an indication of a very testing initiation.

In conclusion, we may say that the current social movement against the establishment promoting an outdated religious/ political agenda is going through a testing initiation. The soul of India blocked for too long  seeks manifestation.
