People
pursue what they desire but don't need when they're brimming with confidence in
the future, bolstered by an animal-spirits euphoria that their income and
wealth will continue rising--a sense of certainty anchored by a belief that
their economic world is essentially without risk. When confidence dissipates
and is replaced by fear and uncertainty, desires lose their luster and needs
take precedence. When you're afraid of getting a deadly virus or losing your
livelihood, status symbols and frivolous spending no longer top the agenda. Yet
the entire risk-on / global growth story is based entirely on desires not
needs. The vast majority of demand isn't for a pressing need, it's for euphoric
aspirational consumption, spending intended to make the buyer larger than they
really are, in their own self-image and in the image they present to the world
in the brands they display, the cafes they dine in, etc. etc. In a world of
bogus projections and rigged statistics, plunging demand for oil is one of the
few reality-based measures available. One of the games being played is whenever
a reality-based measure is discovered--electricity consumption, satellite
images of empty parking lots, etc.--authorities immediately limit access to the
measures and/or unleash a tsunami of counter-narratives to discredit the
real-world evidence that global demand is cratering. https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/world-awash-oil-false-assurances-magical-thinking-complacency
Regular readers will be aware that currently the most important
astrological event is the meeting (conjunction) of Saturn and Pluto in
Capricorn. Under this powerful conjunction societal structures are decaying and
breaking down. Resources are limited to stop us from focusing on outer issues.
The conjunction marks the end of an era marked by widespread indulgence,
decadence, naivete, denial and inflation. Pluto amplifies the contraction of
Saturn, separating the essential (need) from the nonessential (desire) in the
face of obstruction, honing our awareness of whatever we wish to determinedly
develop with the time and space available to us. More generally, the
Saturn-Pluto complex tends to constellate a widespread sense that our life is
determined by large impersonal forces over which we have little or no control (see
earlier posts [1][2]).
The Ratchet Wedge Model of breakdown has a certain Saturn-Pluto
flavor.
Pluto, the lord of the underworld, is often linked to the
boiling cauldron of our subconscious desires. When negative it manifests as an
obsessive quality to indulge in things we do not need. Saturn, on the other
hand, encompasses all that involves boundaries and limits. It acts as a reality
check, constricting our desires. It is the conveyor of the hard truth, sobering
and often painful. It shows up as a period of contraction forcing us to
recognize what we need versus what we desire.
I think of the upper line in the Ratchet Wedge Model as
Saturn and the lower one as Pluto. As we bounce between the lower line
representing our obsession for material growth and consumption (Pluto) and the upper
line symbolizing the reality check imposed by lack of resources, obstructions etc. (Saturn)
we are forced into a narrow space hopefully ready for cleansing, renewal and rebirth after shedding the trappings of the ego.
