The EU Saturn return

 

Europe is walling itself off from Russia, China, and the emerging integrated Asian market. Under pressure from the US, it has sanctioned itself from ‘dependency’ on Russian natural gas (without prospect of any immediate alternatives). The New York Times describes this impact on local businesses and industries as nothing short of “frightening”, as all kinds of small businesses across Europe (prior to the Ukraine invasion) have been forced to cease their operations as energy costs outweigh profits.

 

What, if anything, is showing the current crisis in the horoscope of the European Union. Take a look at the EU chart and you will notice that it is going through its first Saturn return. In the radix, Saturn [23aq38] is the apex of a T-square with Mars [24sc06] - Pluto[24sc45] - Moon [24ta19]. 

In a previous post [1] on the EU chart, I wrote: 

Pluto’s transit through Capricorn (..or aspects to its ruler Saturn as is the case here) is serving to break outmoded and artificial standards, to decimate the hypocrisies of social convention, and of social extremes. It also brings emphasis to address patterns of avoidance or fears to relinquish diminishing modes of living, or fabricating reasons justifying disempowerment and inaction by blaming external conditions. This requires determination and conviction to willingly choose to live authentically and from true heart's passion. 

If we have a history of defiant, Plutonian eruptions against rules and authority, Saturn is now warning us to exert self-control and discipline . On the other hand and this is the more likely scenario, most of us have not been too aggressive with our Plutonian drives. In this case defiance and rage have not been a part of our repertoire in dealing with power and authority, then this Saturn transit allows us the transformative option of bringing more of our Pluto potential into a concrete, workable form ( We get to manifest some of what has been typically kept under wraps because of hidden fears, internal taboos, shame, intimidation or ignorance of our potential). 

This then is the challenge for the EU at the Saturn return. European foreign policy has thus far been dictated by the US. The Saturn return provides an opportunity for Europe to acquire integrity and stand up to being bullied. Can it to do it? Doesn’t look likely. Now take a look at Putin’s chart. He has radix Pluto on his MC...which is currently being transited by an opposition from Saturn. Notice how well he is responding to the US/NATO push to encroach on what is historically Russia’s area of influence.

Every birthchart may be looked upon as a symbolic picture of frozen karma. Most of us are so conditioned by society and culture that our lives are only a superficially modified repetition of the sociocultural past. We must choose between repeating the past or choosing to transform that past in a creative way. This is how karma is produced. It is not produced so much by a wrong kind of action ("sin") as by the type of action which derives from a refusal to perform creative acts , when the need for them has come.
