The use of the tropical zodiac in modern astrology has led to its disconnection with the stars. In this post we shall see how that can be a major disadvantage. The tragic story of Blanca Arellano can be understood if we draw the chart for the November New Moon at Lima where it is placed very significantly on the descendant. The New Moon [1sa37] is in tropical Sagittarius - a sign that people would associate with good things, bright and sunny optimism, joviality etc. But if we turn to the star constellations, we will find that the New Moon is conjunct the stars Kornephoros, beta Herculis and gamma Lupi, the wild beast. Diana Rosenberg writes that Lupus has kinship with the cruelty and savagery of wild beasts and symbolizes the feral savage that lies beneath the veneer of civilization.
About the constellation Hercules, Roman astrologer, Manilius wrote:
"Hercules, the figure on bended knee and called by the Greek name of Engonasin, about whose origin no certainty prevails. Of this constellation is begotten the desertion, craftiness, and deceit characteristic of its children, and from it comes the thug who terrorizes the heart of the city". And going one step further, we notice that the Ascendant [27ta58] is conjunct the star Algol [26ta29] often shown as the decapitated head of Medusa metaphorically standing for gruesome murder.

The New Moon receives a trine aspect from the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction. Although Jupiter in Pisces is traditionally labeled a purely beneficial influence, as we know human nature can utilize the nourishing growth of Jupiter for excesses stimulated by misguided notions. When Neptune combines with Jupiter we can be led astray through illusion, escapism, and intoxication and we need to keep in mind the potential for deluding ourselves. Blanca Arellano was probably a victim of delusion.
