A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Japan on Monday afternoon, collapsing buildings, causing fires and triggering tsunami alerts as far away as eastern Russia, prompting orders for residents to evacuate affected coastal areas of Japan.

Astrologers make a distinction between primary and secondary causes of events. For example a transit at the exact time of an event is a seondary cause much like the minute or second hand of the clock. On the other hand a primary cause, the hour hand, can be an eclipse, ingress, lunation or exact planetary aspect etc. These events can be far removed in time from the actual incident.
Quite often, as in this case, a chart drawn for the actual event [1] may not be very impressive. However, if we look at the chart for the current New Moon we notice that a retrograde Jupiter in Taurus [6ta] is placed on the IC, 4th house cusp.
In her book Secrets of the Ancient Skies, among events linked to the stars that conjoin Jupiter, Diana Rosenberg has “earthquakes, tsunamis and sea surges”. On Dec. 31, Jupiter stationed to go direct on the IC of the New Moon chart causing the massive earthquake. The fixed signs especially Taurus and Scorpio are more “often related to great shocks of earthquakes than are any other signs” [2].
Often there can be more than one indicator of a major mundane event. On Jan 1, Venus and Saturn formed an exact square. As always focus on the angles. A chart for the event at Wajima has the Mercury station [22sa] on the IC conjunct Mars [27sa] and square Neptune [25pi]. Diana Rosenberg links the stars on the IC to “earthquakes” (see red bracketed text).
