Stop helping others

As a society we admire those who live for others, but their dedication might be hiding a thirst for power, a need to feel indispensable, or an impulse to do even more in order to feel better about themselves. In this post we examine the horoscope of Carl Jung to understand why he asks that we stop helping others.

Carl Jung gave a series of lectures at Fordham University from September 9–28, 1912. The lectures were a turning point in the history of psychoanalysis, and set the stage for Jung's future work. Two significant events were taking place at this time.

(a) In this period Uranus was transiting over Jung’s Ascendant [1aq] completing a T-square with radix Neptune [3ta] - Sun [3le].

(b) Jung’s lunar return chart for September 1912 at New York (location of Fordham University) has Uranus opposite Neptune aligned with the meridian.

So essentially Jung is teaching us about the energy of Uranus-Neptune and how to navigate it.

Neptune is esentially about “no boundaries” and therefore about merging with others from which stems the desire to help unconditionally but also a lack of awareness of one’s unconscious motives. Confusion not only results from the truth being obscured but it is the handmaid of the dark Neptunian force to keep at bay the clear thinking that might illuminate the Truth. Neuroses are the outcome of the twisted paths on which this force leads the mind and the emotions to keep it from the secret. These neuroses then further embroil the soul in false and distracted illusions. Addiction, self-sabotage and even suicide are the ultimate distractions to replace true self-surrender. It is no accident that “hitting bottom” is so often the prelude to stepping onto the path toward self-transcendence.

In contrast, the more mental Uranus is not ready to give up its freedom and individuality and harbors a desire to rationally understand motives. Under the influence of Uranus, people learn to understand their dark side (the shadow”) as they go through the process of “individuation” and graduation from the Neptunian sea of collective unconsciousness.
