Controversial Painter: M F Husain

M.F. Husain: Nude Saraswati

Nearly two dozen paintings by one of the world's most celebrated modern artists - once part of a record-breaking art deal - are set to hit the auction block for the first time next week. On 12 June, 25 rare MF Husain paintings will go under the hammer at an art gallery in Mumbai city, more than two decades after he painted them. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwy62zn0nxgo

M.F. Husain, one of India’s most celebrated artists, painted nude depictions of Indian goddesses, such as Saraswati and Durga, as part of his exploration of Indian mythology, spirituality, and artistic expression. His works often blended traditional Indian themes with modernist techniques, drawing inspiration from ancient Indian art, including temple sculptures and miniature paintings, where nudity was sometimes depicted to symbolize purity, divinity, or the human form's sanctity.

THE SPIRITUAL PRACTICE OF INNOCENCE

Husain's rationale, as expressed in interviews and writings, was rooted in his view of the divine feminine as a universal, timeless force. He saw nudity in these paintings not as eroticism but as a celebration of the goddess's spiritual and creative essence, free from societal constraints. For instance, his depiction of Saraswati, often shown with minimal clothing, aimed to evoke her as the embodiment of knowledge and creativity, drawing from classical Indian iconography where divine figures are sometimes portrayed in stylized, non-sexualized nudity.

However, these works sparked significant controversy, particularly in the 1990s, as some Hindu nationalist groups and conservative factions deemed them blasphemous or disrespectful to religious sentiments. Critics argued that depicting goddesses nude was offensive to Hindu culture, despite the historical precedent in ancient art. Husain maintained that his intent was not to offend but to reinterpret mythology through a modern lens, emphasizing the goddesses' divine power and beauty. The backlash led to legal cases, vandalism of his exhibitions, and his eventual self-imposed exile from India in 2006.

On the other hand, defenders of Husain, including art historians and liberal intellectuals, argue that his paintings were a continuation of India’s artistic heritage, where nudity in religious art was not taboo but a symbol of transcendence. They point to examples like Khajuraho temple carvings, where divine and human forms are depicted nude to signify spiritual liberation.

MF Husain’s (b. 17 Sep 1915) noon horoscope is shown here. A Sun-Venus-Poseidon [23vi-24vi] conjunction is opposite Hades. Venus is art, Poseidon is related to religious motifs and Hades can be interpreted as “disatasteful" but also refer to primitive ideas that may have been forgotten or suppressed.

The March 14 total lunar eclipse [23vi] not only fell on his radix combination but was also angular (4th - 10th houses) at Bombay. Both these are now being activated with transit S.Node [23vi] moving over them.

Since this eclipse took place on the meridian in India, it influenced several events. In [1] I encouraged readers to see a pattern in those events - the truth covered up by lies and false belief systems that imprison us, so well explained in the video clip [2]
