Indian classical music, encompassing both Hindustani (Northern) and Carnatic (Southern) traditions, uses RAGAS as melodic frameworks to create unique emotional atmospheres. Unlike Western music, which often relies on lyrics for expression, RAGAS focus on the essence of sound, evoking feelings through the arrangement of notes and improvisation. This approach aligns with the Sanskrit meaning of "raga," which translates to "color" or "passion," suggesting a coloring of the listener's mind. Beyond emotional expression, RAGAS are seen as a spiritual practice, or "nada sadhana," where music connects the listener to universal truths.
Readers familiar with astrology will recognize the link between classical Indian music and the planet Neptune - associated with the concept of “no forms” (boundaries) and reaching towards the formless divine. It seems likely that RAGAS also serve a spiritual purpose, acting as a pathway to self-realization and transcendence, deeply rooted in Indian philosophical traditions.
Presented here are the horoscopes of noted Indian classical master Kumar Gandharva [1] and his wife Vasundhara Komkali. Notice that both horoscopes have a strong aspect between Sun and Neptune marking them out as potentially successful classical music singers. .Vasundhara performed as a vocal accompanist to Kumar Gandharva. They were married in 1962. At their marriage, Kumar Gandharva’s directed solar arc Venus was conjunct his radix Pluto [10cn]. With Vasundhara’s natal Sun [1ge] conjunct Gandharva’s natal Venus-Moon [3ge] the marriage became an ideal partnership. In 1962 fortunate Jupiter had entered Gandharva’s 7th house making a hard aspect to his radix Moon-Venus combination and Vasundhara’s Sun all in Gemini. Depicted with a lyre, the Gemini twins seen embracing each other are also associated with music (see image).
In a previous post Shiva-Parvati: Pluto-Venus [2] I wrote :
Parvati doesn’t gain Shiva’s attention because she is beautiful. She gains his attention because her inner light was brilliant. Parvati, unable to rely on externals, has to go on an inner journey. Each of us has this journey to go on. Along the way, we fall down, tip over, get twisted, and arrive wiser. Parvati represents that part of us that doesn’t give up. She shows us that hard work and inner discipline are necessary for growth.
