Regular readers will be able to see the two news items as expressions of the Mars-Saturn-Uranus T-square energy. Saturn often appears as authority while Mars expresses as anger or rebellion especially when accompanied by Uranus.  When negative,  Saturn suppresses Mars, and Mars wounds Saturn.  As a result Mars-Saturn aspects have a reputation for ruthless, controlling and even brutal behaviors which could actually be originating from a deep feeling of powerlessness.

In Haiti, the rebels (Mars-Uranus) have succeeded in assassinating the President (Saturn). The reverse has happened in South Africa, authorities  (Saturn) have sent the former President (now a rebel - Mars) to jail.

Presented here are charts for Mercury’s ingress into sidereal Gemini on July 8, drawn for (a)  Port-au-Prince, Haiti (b) Pretoria, South Africa. Notice the alignment of the Mars-Saturn-Uranus T-square with the angles in each case.
