Connections between the Intuit goddess Sedna and the Indian goddess Meenakshi

Sedna

In this post we examine the similarities in the stories of the Intuit goddess Sedna [1] and the Indian goddess Meenakshi [2].

Sedna's myth may exemplify how the repression of the feminine has reached a stage where women no longer participate with men on the journey of the evolution of consciousness. This may be due to their fear of being hurt—an unresolved issue or molding from their unfortunate past, one that only perpetuates a life of loneliness. But hopefully that is about to change, as Sedna's path through the heavens reveals.

Positively expressed, Sedna articulates the “return of the exiled feminine principle.” Her message is that humanity must recognize the truth about the suppression, persecution, abduction and exploitation of the feminine force in the world (both of females and of the feminine principle); and the mentality perpetuating such must be addressed and changed.[3][4]

At her discovery on 14 November 2003, Sedna was south of the ecliptic in Cetus, just past the jaws of ole' Cetus (Menkar) in late sidereal Aries, as if just emerging from Cetus' mouth. Menkar marks the jaws of Cetus. North of the ecliptic and conjoining Menkar is Almach the foot of princess Andromeda. (Recall the story of Andromeda betrayed by her father King Cepheus) [3][4]

In classical astrology Almach is considered to be "honorable and eminent," however, Almach is the beautiful but snagged foot of Andromeda about to be snapped by the jaws (Menkar) of ole' Cetus, the fear-instilling technobureaucratic monster created by collective human consciousness.

Although we may find ourselves in entrapping situations apparently caused by forces around us, here we are inspired to take responsibility for our naiveté and to do the inner work to become self-reliant rather than dependent and thus continually at the mercy of any manipulative forces around us or entrapping situations we may find ourselves in; or become forever snapped at by the jaws of ole Cetus.[3][4]

The discovery chart of Sedna has the Sun [21sc27] conjunct the fixed star Unukulhai (quarrels, exile, unhappy life) opposite the Node and TNP Admetus [21ta] (frozen, cold, symbolically withdrawn) square the Centaur Asbolus [21aq39] (total helplessness, desolate)

Asbolus

Exaggerated personal boundary control so that even the positive cannot enter the system; unecessary isolation; soot - representing the left over products of an incomplete combustion; if fire is enlightenment, the Asboulus “soot” represents a failure to reach enlightenment and deep changes in consciousness; the bottom of the pit, symbolically an area of total helplessness, the desolate; waiting for external help from the camp of human kindness. [5]

Research suggests that the Intuit goddess Sedna and Meenakshi share themes of transformation and empowerment through challenges. It seems likely both myths involve a descent into deeper aspects, symbolizing psychological growth. The evidence leans toward both having connections to the unconscious, linked to water imagery. There may be differences in their contexts, but core psychological meanings appear similar.

Both goddesses undergo significant changes through facing adversity. Sedna, betrayed and thrown into the sea, transforms into a powerful sea goddess, controlling marine life. Meenakshi, born with a unique destiny, conquers kingdoms before becoming Shiva's consort (destruction of past behaviour patterns is a necessary prerequiste), reflecting a journey of self-discovery. This suggests a psychological process of growth through overcoming obstacles.

Both myths involve a "descent" into deeper realms, symbolizing the unconscious. Their stories show empowerment through sacrifice. Sedna loses her fingers, becoming the mother of sea creatures, while Meenakshi gives up her warrior role (male role) for divine (feminine) status. This reflects the psychological idea of letting go to gain a higher state of being. Water imagery, like Sedna's sea and Meenakshi's "fish-eyed" name, links both to the unconscious, a common symbol in psychology.

Sedna starts as a defiant young woman, refusing suitors, and becomes a powerful figure whose anger affects hunters, highlighting her agency transformed into control over nature. Meenakshi, as a warrior queen, demonstrates independence before integrating into a relational role with Shiva, balancing feminine and masculine energies. Both explore different facets of female power—Sedna's primal and Meenakshi's societal—reflecting the complexity of the feminine divine (The goddess Meenakshi of Madurai). Psychologically, this suggests myths address the tension between independence and interdependence, a universal aspect of feminine identity.

Sedna's relationship with her father is marked by betrayal, shaping her transformation into a goddess of fear and respect. Meenakshi's father supports her, raising her as a prince, but her true transformation comes through union with Shiva, integrating masculine and feminine energies. While the relationships differ (negative for Sedna, positive for Meenakshi), both are pivotal, reflecting how external influences shape psychological journeys. This highlights the role of paternal figures in destiny, whether through conflict or harmony.

Finally, there appears to be a cosmic stamp, so to speak, on the connection between the two goddesses. The lunar eclipse of November 9, 2003 (just 5 days before Sedna’s discovery) fell very significantly on the horizon at the co-ordinates of the Meenakshi temple in Madurai with the Full Moon conjunct Sedna! Coincidence or synchronicity?
