Astrologers often look at the stars and other celestial objects, a new body aligns with at the time of its discovery to interpret its meaning. Sila-Nunam was discovered on Feb 4, 1997 at [23cn35] at Mauna Kea Observatory (19°48 N latitude and 155°28 W longitude) conjunct the stars Pollux and Procyon.
In the image above are Nick Fiorenza’s notes on the role of these two stars. If Pollux is the immortal extra-terrestrial dark Gemini Twin who is an ambassador, orator, link and liason then perhaps his cosmic work is to reveal the misunderstood, hidden and repressed side of the spiritual life. Together with Procyon he inspires us to ally with others or with a group to achieve a greater spiritual purpose that may not be easily understood by society.
Another method of understanding a newly discovered body is to look at the stars that align with the Node. Sila Nunam’s North Node [4aq] aligns with the bright star Altair [2aq] in the constellation Aquila, the Eagle. Among other things, Nick Fiorenza associates Altair with mystics and mystery-religions where spiritual hierophants interpret or explain esoteric mysteries or sacred knowledge to a group of followers. Philip Sedgwick’s key phrases of Sila Nunam appear to resonate with this interpretation “compassion for sincere or devout people, nurturing, high-minded”.
Dane Rudhyar’s interpretation of the Sabian symbol of the degree at which Sila Nunam was discovered offers insight that can be integrated with the above analysis.
PHASE 114 (CANCER 24°): A WOMAN AND TWO MEN CASTAWAYS ON A SMALL ISLAND OF THE SOUTH SEAS.
KEYNOTE: The focalization of complex inner potentialities in harmonic and concrete relationships.
We are dealing here with a special phase of the process of integration. The woman and the two men represent the three-fold aspect of the human personality, particularly at this stage when one of these aspects — the emotional life (the woman) — is facing the possibility, if not the inevitability, of relating itself to both the spiritual and the mental. This confrontation occurs on a small island of the South Seas, and "south" always refers symbolically to the strong and passionate impulses of human nature. Somehow the three-fold consciousness has to develop a harmonious and well-integrated modus vivendi (a specific way of life). If successful, this will release powerful energies and will lead to the next symbolic scene.
We have reached the fourth stage of the twenty-third five-fold sequence. As is most often the case, we are introduced here to a specific technique — or at least to a problem of technique — in living. The three human beings should become integrated; but the form this integration will take seems left open. It has to be a concrete type of integration in terms of the emotional and biological drives of human nature (an island of the South Seas) and the field of integration is "small." The key to the problem of relationship should be the realization of INTER-DEPENDENCE.
At first glace, this symbol appears to hint at a “love triangle” . Love triangles often fail because they create emotional instability and competing interests. Humans crave security and exclusivity in romantic bonds, but a triangle splits attention and loyalty, breeding jealousy, insecurity, and mistrust. Communication breakdowns are common—each person’s needs clash, and unresolved tensions escalate. Psychologically, the "third wheel" often feels sidelined, while the central figure faces pressure to choose, leading to resentment or burnout. The Sabian symbol [cn24] is about learning master of these energies.
An important celestial event such as an eclipse occuring close to the discovery date of an object also provides hints about what the object might mean. Sila Nunam was discovered just about a month before the solar eclipse of Mar 8,1997 at [18pi30]. The Sabian for the eclipse degree was:
PHASE 349 (PISCES 19°): A MASTER INSTRUCTING HIS DISCIPLE.
KEYNOTE: The transfer of power and knowledge which keeps the original spiritual and creative Impulse of the cycle active and undeviated.
The Hindu ideal of the sacred relationship between guru and chela (disciple) has of late become familiar to a vast number of young and not-so-young people. The doctrine of "the Apostolic succession" in the Roman Catholic Church has a similar significance. The Power and archetypal knowledge released "in the beginning" of any cycle (or at "Creation") must be perpetuated until the very Last Day — the Omega state of which Teilhard de Chardin glowingly speaks. This Power is the "self" of the cyclic manifestation, the unchanging Tone (AUM) of all existences within this cycle. It can be transmitted from master to disciple at the latter's "Initiation." It must be so transmitted for when the line of transmission (in Sanskrit, guruampara) is discontinued, the cyclic process begins to collapse in futility and spiritual darkness.
To my mind this Sabian resonates with the theme of Altair above “mystery-religions where spiritual hierophants interpret or explain esoteric mysteries or sacred knowledge to a group of followers”.
In conclusion, here is an extract from my first post Astrology of the KBO Sila-Nunam [1] where I essentially arrived at the same conclusion.
In my opinion, the purpose of Sila-Nunam is to brings to our awareness subtle and metaphysical realities currently looked upon as evil or decadent and not always sufficiently included in our socioculturually programmed everyday belief systems and paradigms. Some cultures seem to be more conscious of these considerations, and these are often the more nature-focused and less crassly materialistic cultures.
This does not mean that the energies and issues of Sila-Nunam are inherently primitive, but they appear crude to cultures that shut such issues and energies out, remain in denial of them, or push them aside as "inferior" or "primitive" issues or behavior. Sila Nunam forces us to face the most intensely and emotionally overwhelming, primal experiences and at the same time remain emotionally calm and centered.
