On August 24, 2026, James Howard Kunstler published “Cookery for All”[1] on his website. In one particularly sharp passage he writes:
“Now it happens that a primary feature of this Fourth Turning crisis in our techno-industrial order is excessive complexity that produces diminishing returns — that is, makes things worse rather than better. And a lot of this excessive complexity lodges itself in finance, because using operations that few people can understand serves beautifully in the engineering of frauds and swindles. Financial frauds and swindles, in turn, muddle the verity of money — in which finance is enacted — and things denominated in money — securities and so forth, all based fundamentally in debt. So, the net effect of such debauched finance leads to a great deal of insecurity and anxiety over money.”
That paragraph could almost have been written as a direct commentary on the progressed U.S. Sibly solar-return chart for the same day.
Using the mean quotidian method, the solar return for the Sibly chart (Philadelphia, 12:00 EDT) shows the Midheaven progressed into an exact conjunction with Saturn at 14° Aries. This is no minor trigger. Saturn on the MC of a solar return places the entire year under a demand for accountability, contraction, and the cold light of consequence.
What Saturn is activating is even more telling. In the solar return itself we find this potent opposition:
Arachne 15° Capricorn – Nemesis 16° Capricorn
opposite
Sun 13° Cancer – Hades 15° Cancer – Kronos 16° Cancer
Martha Wescott’s keywords for these points are especially useful here.
Arachne: Intricate detail; creation of intrigue and entanglement; layered complications/meanings; entrapment; contact with weaving, knitting, networks, spider webs.
Nemesis: The Undoing, the Achilles Heel, the bête noire; seeking to place blame; scapegoating; finger-pointing; identification of the enemy, fault, or source of a problem.
Together, Arachne/Nemesis describe problems that feel like plots or conspiracies, situations in which people are blamed for being implicated (or for implicating others), and systems so intricate that they become a noose or a web. Wescott notes that some difficulties “will readily yield to the description: ‘a viper’s tangle’… the problem is so damned complicated—and involves so much—that it becomes a noose, a net or a web of intrigue and complicity.”
The Sibly Sun sits in the 8th house — the house Dane Rudhyar associated with business, commerce, shared resources, and the hidden mechanics of value and debt. When transit/progressed Saturn squares that Sun while the Arachne–Nemesis opposition is live, the chart is essentially saying: the web of financial complexity is now under pressure, the undoing is becoming visible, and the search for who or what is to blame is intensifying.
Kunstler’s article lands on the exact day this configuration is triggered by the progressed Midheaven–Saturn conjunction. He names the excessive complexity, locates it primarily in finance, describes how that complexity enables frauds and swindles, and points to the resulting anxiety over the “verity of money.” The language is almost a vernacular translation of Arachne opposite Sun-Hades-Kronos, with Saturn providing the hard edge of consequence.
Whether one views this as pure synchronicity or as an archetypal resonance between a gifted observer and the collective chart, the fit is striking. On the day Saturn reaches the Midheaven of the U.S. solar return, a prominent American writer publishes a clear-eyed diagnosis of the very tangle the chart is highlighting: the over-complex, debt-saturated financial system that has become both the engine and the potential undoing of the current order.
The web is tightening. Saturn is insisting we look at it.
