On 29 August 2026 at 13:00:07 UT, a quietly powerful video appeared on YouTube: You Don’t Have to Be Useful — Zhuangzi’s Taoist Lesson on Self-Worth.[1] It arrived only about a day and a half after the deep partial lunar eclipse of 27–28 August 2026 (greatest eclipse near 04:13 UT on the 28th). The timing feels almost intentional — as if the sky and the algorithm briefly spoke the same language.
The video explores one of the most exhausting modern beliefs: that our value is measured by how useful we are to other people. Drawing on the Taoist sage Zhuangzi, it retells two classic stories. First is the huge, twisted tree that Huizi dismisses as useless timber. Zhuangzi replies that the tree’s very crookedness is what allows it to live out its full natural life. No carpenter will cut it down; it simply stands there, vast and free. The second story involves two geese: one that can cackle (useful as a watchdog) and one that cannot. The silent goose is chosen for the cooking pot. Zhuangzi’s students are left puzzled — yesterday a tree survived by being useless; today a goose dies for the same reason. Which is better?
Zhuangzi refuses any fixed rule. Sometimes usefulness protects you. Sometimes uselessness does. The real danger is becoming trapped inside either identity — forever performing competence, forever proving you deserve to exist.
