The Unconscious Becomes Fate: The Kolkata Stampede, the Ashlesha Eclipse, and the Call to Dig Deeper

Durya slaying Mahishasur

Two months after the total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026, a tragic stampede occurred on the evening of 17 October at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata. Nineteen lives were lost and many more injured when sudden rain, narrow exits, crowd pressure, and confusion turned a sacred celebration into chaos.

In an earlier reflection on Nag Panchami 2026  [1] I noted that the eclipse took place with the Sun and Moon in Ashlesha near the South Node, intensifying themes of release and the shedding of outdated patterns. The subsequent movement of the Sun into Magha/sidereal Leo spoke of the tension between inherited tradition and the necessity of authentic transformation. The recent tragedy invites us to revisit those themes through the lens of the event chart and a deeper psychological understanding.

The chart for 17 October 2026, 19:30 IST, Calcutta, shows Uranus conjunct the hypothetical point Admetos at 5° Gemini rising on the Ascendant, tightly conjunct the Hyades — the classical “rainers.” This configuration is trine Pluto. Martha Lang-Wescott’s description of Uranus–Admetos is especially resonant: after a period of resisting change, it comes with a bang. Admetos speaks of densification, restriction, blockage, and the pressure that builds within confined structures (literally and metaphorically). Uranus brings the sudden rupture. Pluto supplies the intensity of transformation — or of overwhelming force.

Pluto occupies the 9th house of religion, philosophy, and belief systems. The Venus–Pluto square, anchored to the rising Uranus–Admetos, further charges the chart with themes of the divine feminine under extreme pressure — a striking correspondence in a Durga Puja pandal dedicated to the goddess who slays the buffalo demon Mahishasura, the unregenerated, densified power that resists transformation.

Carl Jung wrote in Aion:

“The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves.”

The Uranus–Admetos–Pluto signature, activated so clearly in a religious setting only weeks after an eclipse of release in the serpent nakshatra Ashlesha, can be read as a collective expression of this rule. When the deeper transformative demand of a tradition is not consciously integrated — when the living spirit is allowed to fossilize into outer form, spectacle, or unexamined management of crowds and structures — the conflict may erupt outwardly as sudden crisis.

The Sabian symbol associated with the rising degree speaks of drilling for oil: the patient, focused work of penetrating beneath the surface to reach concentrated energy. Pluto in the 9th house trine this point suggests that the evolutionary pressure is directed precisely toward religious and philosophical structures. The invitation is not to abandon tradition, but to dig deeper into its living core rather than remaining identified with its fossilized outer shell.

Durga Puja itself dramatizes the victory of awakened consciousness over the unregenerated shadow. The eclipse in Ashlesha asked for the shedding of outdated skins. The stampede chart appears to underline the cost of remaining unconscious of that demand. Jung’s insight remains sobering and hopeful at once: what is made conscious no longer needs to be acted out as fate.

May the memory of those who lost their lives in Chorbagan serve as a call to greater awareness — both practical (in the care of sacred spaces and the people who gather in them) and interior (in the ongoing work of integrating the transformative power that Durga herself embodies).
