Mind Storm - Psychosis
On 1 December 1995 at 16:04 in Riverside, California, William J. Baldwin’s article “Soul-Mind Fragmentation and Recovery” appeared in The International Journal of Regression Therapy. [1]
The chart for that moment, set for the place of publication, reveals a striking dialogue with the preceding Appulse Lunar Eclipse of 8 October 1995.
The eclipse axis at 14° Aries – 14° Libra falls precisely on the meridian of the article chart. That same axis occupies the mundane 6th–12th house polarity. Erin Sullivan’s words on this axis capture the heart of Baldwin’s theme:
“The need to recognize the body (6th) as the vehicle for the soul (12th). The psyche/soma balance is tenuous and delicate. Health and body issues become critical if the soul is crying out for expression in a way which the body is not fulfilling. Conversely, emotional and psychological issues arise in crisis with the body’s state of disrepair. If not consciously chosen, forced introversion will periodically interrupt the mechanical functioning of the body in order to bring the soul to the forefront.”
The Midheaven of the article chart sits at 14° Leo. Dane Rudhyar’s Sabian symbol for this degree is Phase 134 (Leo 14°): A human soul seeking opportunities for outward manifestation. Keynote: the yearning for self-actualization. “Let the soul speak out! Allow the power of the true tone of your being to manifest itself smoothly, easily, unobstructed — or expect a variety of consequences.”
In the article chart a powerful stellium of four planets in Sagittarius occupies the 12th house, the domain of mental complexes, the unconscious, and the hidden. Jupiter at 22° Sagittarius is rising, conjunct the fixed star Ras Alhague in Ophiuchus — the healer eternally wrestling with Serpens. The image is perfect: the poison that afflicts the patient is also the source of the regenerative capacity that can restore wholeness.
When the eclipse chart is progressed (secondary progression, Q2 Mean Quotidian) to the exact date and time of the article, the eclipse axis is brought onto the meridian and thereby triggered. The progressed Ascendant at 24° Sagittarius forms a close conjunction with Jupiter at 22° Sagittarius and a trine to the asteroid Isis at 23° Leo in the article chart. Martha Wescott’s delineation of Isis/Jupiter speaks directly to the subject matter:
“...improvements can depend on piece-meal efforts, some collation — putting the pieces together.”
Soul-mind fragmentation and the careful work of recovery could hardly find a clearer signature.
As if to underline the continuing relevance of the configuration, transit Jupiter is currently conjunct that same Isis position at 23° Leo. No loose ends.
Finally, the progressed Sun of the eclipse chart stands at 15° Libra 02. Rudhyar’s Sabian for Phase 196 (Libra 16°): After a storm a boat landing stands in need of reconstruction. Keynote: the need to keep in operation steady links between the vast Unconscious and the ego-consciousness. Psychotic storms or profound dissociative crises may wreck the ordinary points of contact; the landing places must then be patiently rebuilt.
Baldwin’s article, published under this sky, offers precisely such reconstruction — a practical method for recovering the fragmented pieces of the soul-mind and restoring the delicate bridge between body and spirit. The charts themselves seem to enact the very process the text describes: an eclipse of the ordinary light, a call from the 12th house, a healing stellium in the sign of the higher mind, and the steady work of putting the pieces back together so that the soul may once again find outward manifestation.
