Brazil releases 'good' mosquitoes to fight dengue

Brazilian researchers in Rio de Janeiro have released thousands of mosquitoes infected with bacteria that suppress dengue fever. The hope is they will multiply, breed and become the majority of mosquitoes, thus reducing cases of the disease. BBC; Sep. 24; http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-29356232 This news comes to us at the New Moon of September 24. A chart for the New Moon at Rio de Janerio is shown here. In her article entitled Jupiter/Uranus: Bright Ideas and Breakthroughs , Kelly Surtees wtites [1]: Jupiter brings an expansive, open energy which complements Uranus’ inventive tone. Native American Navajo tribe wins settlement

“Our task must be to free ourselves . . .by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.” -- Albert Einstein BOULDER , Colo. — In the largest settlement obtained by an American Indian tribe from the federal government, the Navajo Nation will receive $554 million to end a lawsuit alleging that the government mismanaged the community’s assets for more than 50 years. The settlement, which the Justice Department outlined on Wednesday, is the latest agreement made between the Obama administration and Indian tribes that say the government did not act in their best interests when managing their natural resources. The sum the Navajos will receive exceeds agreements with other tribes by more than $170 million; the arrangement will be formally announced Friday at the Navajo Nation headquarters in Window Rock, Ariz. Indian Supreme Court cancels coal scandal permits

India 's Supreme Court has cancelled almost all the coal mining licences awarded by the government since 1993 in a corruption scandal which has cost the country tens of billions of dollars. The court scrapped 214 of 218 licences awarded from 1993-2010 after finding they had been awarded illegally. BBC; Sept 24 Among other things, the 9 th house in mundane astrology rules the law courts as well as long distance travel . In yesterday’s post on India ’s Mars mission we saw how the activation of the last lunar eclipse of April 15 resulted in a successful space mission. Here the very same activation will be studied to see its working in our present case. Let us first look at the Jupiter [14le] transit over the Ascendant [13le] trine Uranus [13ar] which is part of the Grand Cross containing the Uranus-Pluto square. The Uranus-Pluto square is about the process of transformation in which an old corrupt order is collapsing (Pluto in Capricorn). Here the Jupiter transit...

India's first Mars satellite 'Mangalyaan' enters orbit

India has successfully put a satellite into orbit around Mars, becoming the fourth nation or geo-bloc to do so. The Mangalyaan robotic probe, one of the cheapest interplanetary missions ever, will soon begin work studying the Red Planet's atmosphere. Only the US , Russia and Europe have previously sent missions to Mars, and India has succeeded on its first attempt - an achievement that eluded even the Americans and the Soviets. BBC; Sept 24 To understand this news we will look at the chart for the April 15,2014 Lunar Eclipse at Delhi . The Sun is placed in the 9 th house of long distance travel. The Ascendant [13le] is trine Mercury [13ar] and Uranus [13ar] also in the 9 th house.  Eclipses  can be triggered by transits and progressions. Here we have at least three such events (a) Mercury transiting over the eclipse Moon on September 22 (b) Jupiter transiting over the Ascendant and trine Uranus and Mercury in the 9 th (c) the eclipse chart progr...

New Moon highlights bygone photographic oddities

Lined up for a family photograph, Victorians often looked grim and staid - people from another era. But curator Chris Wild offers a fascinating snapshot of family life that reveals the Victorians and Edwardians were often more modern than we think. Chris Wild - otherwise known as the Retronaut - has spent the past year mining the photographic collection of the Woodhorn Museum and Northumberland Archives. This fascinating treasure trove - which will be exhibited from 27 September - is designed to change our perception of the past. Lasers reveal the secrets of Angkor Wat

Back in the 1860s Angkor Wat was virtually unheard of beyond local monks and villagers. The notion that this great temple was once surrounded by a city of nearly a million people was entirely unknown. It took over a century of gruelling archaeological fieldwork to fill in the map. The lost city of Angkor slowly began to reappear, street by street. But even then significant blanks remained. Then, last year, archaeologists announced a series of new discoveries - about Angkor , and an even older city hidden deep in the jungle beyond. An international team, led by the University of Sydney 's Dr Damian Evans, had mapped 370 sq km around Angkor in unprecedented detail - no mean feat given the density of the jungle and the prevalence of landmines from Cambodia 's civil war. Yet the entire survey took less than two weeks. Their secret? Lidar - a sophisticated remote sensing technology that is revolutionising archaeology, especially in the tropics. Mounted on a helicopter criss-c...

The family whose legendary wealth flowed from Standard Oil is planning to announce on Monday that its $860 million philanthropic organization, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, is joining the divestment movement that began a couple years ago on college campuses. The announcement, timed to precede Tuesday’s opening of the United Nations climate change summit meeting in New York City , is part of a broader and accelerating initiative. 'I lost a job because of my tattoos'

Readers have been getting in touch about their experiences of terminated job interviews, losing out on promised promotions and leaving jobs because of their tattoos. It followed a Magazine article which asked whether discrimination against people with tattoos should be banned in the workplace. BBC; Sept 22 http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-29211526 On July 16 at 11:22:52 UT, the Sun [23cn52] was square the Mean Node [23li52]. This is a phenomena known as “Moon Wobble”. While it was exact on July 16, 2014 it was felt for approximately a week on either side. Moon Wobble are cycles associated with the conjunction (0°), opposition (180°) and square (90°) from the Sun to the Moon's Node. These powerful contacts occur when the Sun and the Node are in the same sign, or the opposing sign, or when the Sun is in a square aspect to the nodal axis. During Moon Wobble the instability factor is high, resulting in more accidents, fires, plane crashes, freak accidents, f...

The discovery of an enormous tomb in northern Greece , dating to the time of Alexander the Great of Macedonia, has enthused Greeks, distracting them from a dire economic crisis.
