Astrology of the French Unrest

For three weeks, tens-of-thousands of French protesters have donned yellow vests and marched throughout Paris. While the "yellow vest" movement began on November 17 as a grassroots protest against president Emmanuel Macron's gas tax - levied in the name of climate change, it has morphed into a general rage against the French government in general at a time when Macron's approval rating is at an all time low. In a  previous blog [1], I used the chart for the November New Moon to explain the fuel protests in Paris. Here we will examine the national horoscope of France [2] to understand the current unrest. In this chart the most powerful current direction is Pluto transiting through the 10th house opposite the Moon [21cn] in the 4th square the Ascendant (or cusp of 1st house).

Readers who are unfamiliar with the meaning of the houses may please refer to references below from Deborah Houlding’s  The Houses – Temples of the Sky.

The 10th house rules “those in authority over the nation whether prime ministers, governments, kings, presidents or dictators” [3]. The 1st house is associated with “the common people or general state of the nation” [4]. Among planets the Moon rules “the public” [5].

An opposition from the 10th to the 4th is then simply interpreted as the public vs the government. With Pluto involved we are seeing an outpouring of anger/rage [6] from the public (Moon).

To plot the trends for a month, astrologers often cast what is referred to as the “lunar return chart” which is essentially a chart drawn for the moment the Moon returns to its radix position. Here is the current lunar return chart for France. As always the planetary configurations on the angles (horizon or meridian) are the ones to focus on. Here the Moon opposite Pluto aligns perfectly with the horizon and also forms hard aspects to the now forming Sun-Mars-Neptune square. Keywords for Mars are “anger, aggression and assertiveness” [7] while that for Neptune include “oil” and “feelings of victimization” [8]. This explains the news very elegantly.
